"The River Boss" 2013 Limited Edition Old Growth Mahogany Friction Call
The wood The River Boss is constructed of has a rich history dating back into the 1700's. At the time the country of Belize was a Commonwealth of Great Britain where the British used the countryside of Belize to harvest tropical hardwoods of many varieties. The Old Growth Honduran Mahogany that this call is crafted from was highly sought after for furniture, cabinetry and ship building. Harvest of these large Mahogany logs occured in the dry season and were moved to the large rivers where they would set for up to eight months waiting on the rainy season to transport them down stream to coastal harbors where they would be loaded on ships and returned to Europe. It is believed during this process that as much as 50% of this Old Growth Honduras Mahogany was lost in the process where it came to rest on the bottom of these rivers where the rot resistance of mahogany coupled with the preservation effect of the mud allows it to be salvaged in nearly pristine condition.
In July of 2009 a domestic company formed a partnership with a company in Belize to salvage this rare wood and bring it to the United States for the use of skilled craftsman as well as allow these beautiful forest to recover from years of intense logging. Much like the past this wood is still highly valued for furniture and cabinetry but has become highly prized for musical instruments. Unlike Mahogany today this Old Growth Mahogany grew in pristine conditions allowing it to sport tight growth rings of up to 40-60 per inch. These tight growth rings indicates a much a denser mahogany than what is available today and bolsters the acoustical properties of this wood creating a lively resonance. Coupled with the density, this woods long rest under cold water serves to wash the resins from the woods heightening the sound of any instrument produced from it, including The River Boss. When you hold The River Boss you are not only holding a fantastic turkey call, but a tremendous piece of history.
For years our Cedar Assasin Bronzed Glass has been our best selling friction call as well as being the choice of our Pro-Staff on the stage as well as in the woods. The Bronzed Glass has a wider frequency range than regular glass allowing for high pitched kee kees, intense cutting, demanding yelps as well as toning down for soft tree talk. This surface coupled with the Old Growth Mahogany has helped to serve a wider range of tones as well as an increased liveliness to this call. Each call is individually hand turned, tuned and tested with a great deal of attention to detail to ensure that each River Boss meets our high standards. After testing numerous woods and striker designs we have decided the provided striker helps this call to perform at its best, but the call will respond to a wide array of wood and striker designs. The stunning look of the Old Growth Mahogany will have you wanting to put it on a shelf, but the realistic hen talk will have you putting it in your vest.
